Balanced Literacy Approach

Stack of paperback books. "Our Literacy Journey"
It is the mission of the Stafford Public Schools, to provide a comprehensive literacy program that is rigorous and supports 21st century learning. In an effort to meet the demands of the common core standards, Stafford Public Schools immerses students in a balanced literacy approach. This, means, students engage in all sorts of activities throughout the course of the day to build on all components of language development including speaking, listening, reading, and writing experiences. It is our goal to ensure a high quality foundational and core program that meets the needs of all learners.

Stafford Public Schools is proud to welcome the Wilson Fundations Program to our second grade classrooms. Fundations is an integrated multi-sensory approach, that overlaps skills so students experience the connections between all elements of literacy. Program elements include phonic /word study, letter formation, and handwriting. The PreK - 3rd grade teachers are ready to  continue implementation with the program. We are excited about the success our students have experienced with Fundations!

This month, we recognize:
Laura Morse, Stafford Middle School ELA Teacher
Portrait of teacher Laura Morse. This month we would like to spotlight Laura Morse, an English teacher at the middle school. Laura has been a pivotal contributor to our curriculum work, spending many hours over the summer fine tuning some of the writing units. She continuously works to support all learners. As we navigate through these unprecedented times, Laura has tapped into her creativity and has worked tirelessly to connect with learners. Thanks so much for all that you do for Stafford Middle School!

 Let's Talk Fundations!
Recently, a group of teachers got together to put together "At Home Kits" for remote learners. We continue to find ways to connect with out students learning from home. Teachers spent time putting together tile boards and preparing materials for Wednesdays' Materials Pick Up Day. Be on the lookout for your At Home Fundations Kit! Partners in Literacy

It is our goal to help students in Stafford become confident and passionate readers! There are many ways that you can also help students become passionate about their reading!

Make reading a part of a routine everyday. If you make reading a special part of your day, students will learn to love it as well.

You can choose to read books with your students and go on an adventure, exploring different genres! Students will discover their own interests and passions as they learn about different types of books.

Don't forget! Reading is a language activity. One of the best ways to build language experiences is to talk with your students. Have conversations about the books you read!

Find books on common interests!
